Welcome to the Inkwell awards website.  We are honoring the Best in the comi book art of inking.  Comic artists and Inkers work very hard to present a page for publication and while artists are often given the lionshare of the credit.  The inker finishes the work to give that crisp clean line that comicbooks are known for.  Sometimes an artist draws very loosely and the inker does a lot more work in designing the finished work.  There are some that are supetight. Which is just as difficult because the lineweight may be off.  Now it becomes difficult for the inexperienced inker to keep the comic artists lines as drawn, and add the proper depth and lighting that was left out, while retaining the comic book artists style.  That's where the Comic book inkers we honor come in.  The inker on a particular book may have influenced the wonderful art that the finished book has, yet little is known about waht they do.  Some comic artists want a particular inker and most want that finished look overall to present to the public.  While there are a few that opt for the sketchy look of digital inking it does not translate well.  Most often the digital inking becomes flat with no depth. not to mention the time it takes to ink digitaly as opposed to a skilled Brush or quill inker.

So help us honor these comic book inkers by voting for your favorite and send them a signal by awarding them there due.  Let's tell them good job and we appreciate the work you do.

Comic artists have many awards but inkers rarely get an award.  there hav been inking awards slipped into other awards but fo some reason the really best of the inkers are never picked, I suspect it is because the fans are not really schooled on inkers and those awards do not go out enough with information on inking.

I suppose if we put pencils and inks side by side the fans would see across the boards how much an inker does.  That aside this site is to help educate and inform the fans and readers o the fine craft of true comic book inking.

WHAT IS INKING?

Inking is the craft of enhancing an illustration through the means of redrawing pencil lines with ink and its related tools.  This enhancing, or 'ink editing', would elaborate in the areas of, but not limited to, weight, space, depth, definition, contrast, texture, composition and design.

This is not to be confused with Digital Inking, the art of using a computer drawing tablet with a pressure sensitive stylus, to produce the digitally simulated effect of inking or Digital Darkening, often called by the misnomer 'digital inking', which does not emulate inking but simply alters and darkens the already-existing pencil lines within a scanned file with a computer program like Photoshop.
